Deputy to the Chief Innovation Officer

After several years of designing and growing from coast to coast its pioneering model for empowering young people to see once impossible dreams and put them into action, The Future Project is  preparing to make its service available soon to any school, anywhere.

As The Future Project prepares to grow from serving 25,000 students to millions, from seven states to fifty states, and from a non-profit with 100 people on staff to one of the leading nonprofits in the nation with more—one day—than one thousand, we are searching for all-star leaders to join our passionate and possibility-fueled team.

Your mission as Deputy to the Chief Innovation Officer:

Support Todd in using his time, his words, and his actions to the greatest possible impact.  You will be responsible for ensuring that the Innovation Team functions smoothly and effectively by supporting the CIO with what he needs to be at his best.

About Todd Holcomb, our Chief Innovation Officer:

Todd is dedicated to unlocking positive human potential as a catalyst for meaningful change in the world. For the past two decades, he has worked with CEOs and their leadership teams to build vivid visions for the future, change belief systems and behaviors to realize these visions, and create the conditions for innovation that pave the way. He’s worked with leaders at IBM, HP, Armani Exchange, Brand Nike and Brand Jordan, General Electric, IDEO, Gap, HRC, SACE Australia, XQ Super Schools among others. Todd is known for his human-centered design approach to problem solving in business and in society, and has an intense interest in innovation in education as the foundation for creating citizens that are purposeful, passionate, caring and creative. He holds a JD from Santa Clara University, and a MS in Education from Bank Street College.

You will be perfect for this role if your strengths lie in your ability to:

  • Manage daily, weekly, monthly, and annual priorities
  • Think ahead of where an executive needs to be strategically
  • Create curated sets of tasks and work for others to focus on and ensure they are putting their attention in the most important place
  • Take on special projects; thinking strategically about the issues involved, researching, synthesizing, and distilling key insights into useable and thoughtful end results
  • Work with various stakeholders to fulfill on meeting or project goals

Other things that you will do day-to-day include:

  • Sitting in meetings (note-taking, seeing the big picture and finding gaps, coaching peers)
  • Organizing information (summarizing meeting notes, creating action lists, project plans)
  • Sending communications (writing follow-ups, agendas, reminders, drafting emails)
  • Following up on priorities (writing and reaching out to innovation team members to move work forward)
  • Doing research (creating reports on upcoming meetings or to inform decisions/priorities)
  • Prioritizing work streams and decision points (monitoring progress, priorities, requests)
  • Managing schedule and time demands (prioritizing and scheduling meetings, calls, and other demands for time)

But, what does Todd’s work involve?

This year, Todd he followed this routine for the most part:

  • Monday - Leadership Meetings, Executive 1:1s (8am - 7pm, anywhere from 30mins - 2hrs each)
  • Tuesday - Thursday - Team meetings, direct report 1:1s, creative/innovation direction, planning, individual work time (8am - 7pm, anywhere from 30mins to 1.5hrs each)
  • Friday - Work stream charrettes and integration; functional deep dives (8am - 7PM, anywhere from 1hr to 2hrs)
  • Saturday - Day off and Personal Projects
  • Sunday - Focused Work Time (longer work sessions and correspondences)

Todd’s attention is split into four major areas. Your responsibilities, therefore, also exist in these areas: 

  • Student programming and impact (Dream Directing in schools)
  • Program, Product and Training Innovation (Creating new and improving existing, programs, products, and training to drive student outcomes)
  • Learning and Evaluation (Learning from the world, and in our schools about how to do our work better, and evaluate our impact in the short- and long-term)
  • Dream Director Training and Development  (Year-round development in the competencies that most change student’s lives)
