Chief of Staff


The responsibility of the Chief of Staff is to foster excellence across the organization by ensuring that the CEO has all he needs to be at his best. This includes organizing his daily tasks and routines so he can most accomplish his daily, weekly, and more long term goals.

About our CEO

Andrew Mangino is wildly passionate. He uses his words masterfully to create detailed visions of what can be and inspire people to take bold action. That’s true whether he’s speaking to the team or to influencers that he meets. He sees opportunities wherever he goes and has the ability to foster partnerships with even the most unexpected connections. He’s also a prolific writer and avid reader, both of which he does with incredible speed.

Andrew studied at Yale, serving as Editor in Chief for the student newspaper, before moving to DC to be a speechwriter for Vice President Biden and Attorney General Holder. He then became a senior intrepreneur at Ashoka, before co-founding The Future Project. He was named one of Forbes “30 Under 30” Social Entrepreneurs and a Draper Richards Kaplan Fellow. He’s obsessed with Ben Franklin, John Williams, and Walt Disney.

About the Role

The Chief of Staff, most importantly, will manage Andrew’s responsibilities, strategically curating his tasks on a regular basis, providing all the needed information in a clear and accessible way, cutting out all the noise, and ensuring that he keeps his commitments.

The Chief of Staff will sit in many of the CEO’s meetings, especially when they are likely to produce follow-up action items. It is the Chief of Staff’s responsibility to connect dots and surface new opportunities while not letting anything slip through the cracks.

The Chief of Staff will also ensure that both Andrew and the person he’s meeting with be prepared for their meeting. That includes sending calendar invites, writing agendas, soliciting pre-work, or even having pre-meetings to make sure the meeting is an effective use of time.


Communication with Andrew is a major part of this role. This includes:

  1. Writing long comprehensive memos (usually to be consumed in the early morning)

  2. Writing concise lists and summaries (with only the most important information)

  3. Having rapid fire conversations (many agenda items in little time, often on the phone)

  4. Infrequent deep-dives (usually in person often on weekends or after hours)

Other things that the Chief of Staff will do day-to-day include:

  1. Sitting in meetings (note-taking, seeing the big picture and finding gaps, coaching peers)

  2. Organizing information (summarizing meeting notes, creating lists, going into salesforce)

  3. Sending communications (writing follow-ups, agendas, reminders, drafting emails)

  4. Doing research (creating reports on upcoming meetings or to inform decisions/priorities)

Andrew’s World

Because so much of this role revolves around Andrew and his responsibilities, here’s a picture of what Andrew has on his plate. This year Andrew he followed this routine for the most part:

  • Monday - Team Meetings (8am - 7pm, anywhere from 30mins - 2hrs each)
  • Tuesday - Thursday - Travel/Fundraising (meetings and calls, 15mins - 1hr each)
  • Friday - Team 1:1s with Direct Reports (8am - 7pm, generally 1hr each)
  • Saturday - Day off and Personal Projects
  • Sunday - Focused Work Time (longer work sessions and correspondences)

Andrew’s attention is split into three major areas. The Chief of Staff’s responsibilities therefore also exist in all three of these spaces. They are:

  1. External relationships (fundraising, strategic partnerships, and recruiting talent)

  2. Internal operations (leading the executive team and specific projects he’s involved in)

  3. Launching new initiatives (building the creative lab for society to go beyond schools)


Candidates for this role may come from any background, but experience in a related position, working closely with and for a high-profile individual (whether a principal, executive, politician, or other) is a definite plus. And comfort with all the actions in the day-to-day section above is a must. Subject-matter expertise is not a requirement, but knowledge of fundraising, education, social entrepreneurship, and organizational management are also highly valued.

More generally, the ideal candidate is:

  1. Flexible (comfortable with unpredictable hours and spontaneous travel)

  2. Organized (making sense of the ever-evolving set of responsibilities and relationships)

  3. Strategic (allocating appropriate focus to each priority, ensuring everything gets done)

  4. Articulate (efficient and clear communication in long and short form, written and verbal)

  5. A Dreamer (big ideas, bold visions of the future, sees possibilities not problems)
