The Future Project
The Future Project, which launched in 2011, is one of the nation’s fastest-growing nonprofits – working with tens of thousands of young people from coast to coast to help them to find their passion and purpose, and build the life and world of their dreams.
A creative organization dedicated to bringing people together to create a future better than today, The Future Project is working in partnership with educators, researchers and dozens of the country’s leading philanthropists to develop transformational solutions that solve the greatest problems facing young Americans.
Over the past several years, The Future Project has become well known for its program that challenges students across ten states to become agents of transforming school culture and build projects that will change the world.
Among its other innovations are the new role of Dream Director, which The Future Project is now bringing to schools in all 50 states; a forthcoming service that will empower schools to become places that prepare young people for the future; and a direct-to-student digital academy that will be created with the world’s leading inventors, engineers, and learning content creators.
The Future Project has over 100 diverse, full-time staff in offices in several cities nationwide and headquarters in New York City but, above all, sees itself as a team working in pursuit of shared goals.
As we prepare to achieve our goal of working with one million young people by decades’ end, The Future Project is seeking experienced, passionate, and imaginative executives – who think for themselves and love to activate the genius in others – to build out major functions of the organization and follow through on its most audacious projects… until all young people, no matter their circumstances, are able to grow up with access to their full potential and unique genius.
The Chief Development Officer
Building on early successes as one of the fastest-growing nonprofits in America, The Future Project is entering an exciting period of accelerated growth. The organization is now seeking a stellar, innovative and dynamic Chief Development Officer to play an integral role in that trajectory.
As Chief Development Officer, you will have a compelling role as strategist, fundraiser, entrepreneur, relationship-builder and leader.
So – who are you? You have an authentic passion for unleashing the power of young people and therefore zeal for TFP’s mission and work. Your customer-focus and proven track-record of creating and executing effective fundraising strategies for diverse revenue streams, with success in soliciting and closing 6- and 7-figure gifts, is a given.
You are an entrepreneur at heart. You have experience directing an innovative development strategy within a complex and rapidly changing environment; you will display ownership under dynamic conditions, and will have built a successful development program, not just led a thriving one.
You identify/create opportunity and are energized by innovation, deal-making and driving progress; you have a strong vision and are able to articulate it to diverse stakeholders.
Your powers of persuasion and influence are sky-high; you have a high-level of political acumen, EQ and sophistication; your communication, presentation, cultivation and negotiation skills are exemplary.
You are enterprising, intellectually curious, a voracious learner – you love your craft and have your finger on the pulse of social change and philanthropy.
You are a dreamer and growth-oriented strategist, but also a detail-oriented implementer/operator. You rely on data and analytics as a proof point for your business instinct. You have a successful track record of translating strategic thinking into action plans and monetizing the results, and a keen eye for operational efficiency and optimal use of resources.
And you are a leader. You love to motivate, coach and mobilize a high-performing team to translate ambitious goals into results.
Your dream and objective is to create a nonprofit revenue engine at The Future Project.
Specifically, you will be accountable for spearheading an ambitious yet thoughtful development effort, identifying big opportunities and providing both the strategic direction and deal-making confidence required to successfully drive us to (and maybe past!) our $100m fundraising goal for The Future Project, for which we are already at the halfway point.
By designing, developing and implementing a comprehensive and sustainable fundraising strategy across a diverse portfolio of sources, you will play a crucial role in ensuring our programmatic and functional goals are translated into development objectives and yield valuable, long-term outcomes.
As a key member of senior leadership, contributing to overall organizational strategy, you will lead the mission-critical creation of the annual revenue pipeline - enhancing existing fundraising strategies while overseeing the development, testing and implementation of new fundraising and fee-for-service initiatives.
You will manage and grow a diversified portfolio of major individual and institutional funders/partners, with direct responsibility for the cultivation, engagement and solicitation of a core portfolio of unique philanthropists.
Also key will be your ability to provide strategic counsel on significant relationships held by the executive team and Board.
You will lead a comprehensive development operations program - ensuring the thoughtful engagement of partners, including how we share information, exchange insights and co-invest in opportunities.
With your team, you will design and build development systems and structures that provide both support and accountability, with room for flexibility, across all fundraising activities, including donor communications, stewardship, research/prospecting and analytics.
You will provide leadership and guidance to three accomplished Senior Directors – responsible for Philanthropy, Partnerships and Development Operations – and will aggressively build-out the team to keep up with its aggressive strategy and stellar fundraising successes.
The Future Project team is based in New York City and, as of January 1, 2018, has moved into a new office located on Union Square West.
What To Expect
Once we’ve reviewed your background, our executive recruitment partner will be in touch to learn more about why this opportunity excites you and we’ll begin our conversations there. If, as we get to know each other, we mutually choose to move forward, we’ll ask for you to make something meaningful with us – and, together, we’ll see how that feels.
We look forward to having our Chief Development Officer in place during Q1 2018.
